Sodium Alpha Olefin Sulfonate (AOS) is an anionic surfactant with excellent foaming, emulsification, and cleaning properties. It is available in two forms:
- AOS 92% (Powder/Granular Form) – High-purity solid with strong detergency.
- AOS 38% (Liquid Form) – Water-soluble concentrated solution with good stability.
AOS is widely used in personal care, household detergents, and industrial applications due to its mildness, biodegradability, and excellent wetting ability.
Production Process
The production of AOS involves sulfonation, neutralization, drying, and formulation steps.
Step 1: Sulfonation
- High-purity alpha-olefins (C14-C16 or C12-C18) are reacted with sulfur trioxide (SO₃) in a continuous reactor.
- This produces alkene sulfonic acid, an intermediate form of AOS.
Step 2: Neutralization
- The sulfonic acid is neutralized using sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃) to form sodium alpha-olefin sulfonate.
Step 3: Drying (For AOS 92%)
- The neutralized AOS solution is spray-dried to remove excess moisture, resulting in AOS 92% powder or granules.
